Dyson Gen5detect Review: Dyson's Most Powerful Stick, Assessed

We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. How this works.

The Dyson Gen5detect is the strongest and longest-running cordless stick in Dyson's classic line, with up to 70 minutes of claimed runtime, a power button that replaces the trigger, and Dyson's most thorough sealed HEPA filtration. It is also heavy at around 3.5kg and expensive, so it makes most sense for large homes, allergy sufferers and anyone who dislikes holding a trigger.

Quick answer: Buy the Gen5detect if you want a cordless that can genuinely replace a corded hoover in a large house, especially with allergies in the household, and you can buy it discounted. Skip it if you find 3kg+ sticks tiring or if the price gap to the V15 Detect is large – the V15 cleans almost as well for less.

Design and handling

The Gen5detect's headline change is the power button. Press once and it runs until you press again – no squeezing a trigger for half an hour. For people with arthritis, repetitive strain or just tired hands, this alone can justify choosing it over the V15. It also makes long sessions more relaxed.

The trade-off is weight. At around 3.5kg it is the heaviest of Dyson's mainstream sticks, and in handheld mode it is noticeably front-heavy. On floors the motorised head carries the load and it moves easily; on stairs and overhead you'll feel it. If weight matters, see our lightweight cordless hoover picks.

A combination crevice and brush tool is built into the wand, so you can switch to it without carrying extra tools around the house. The LCD screen shows runtime remaining, mode and particle counts.

Cleaning performance by floor type

Carpets

With the Digital Motorbar head, the Gen5detect is about as strong as cordless sticks get on carpet. Independent lab reviews generally rank it at or near the top of the category for deep-pile cleaning, edging the V15 rather than outclassing it. In practice it can handle a fully carpeted house on Auto in a way older cordless models struggle to.

Hard floors

The Fluffy Optic head lights up fine dust with a laser-style beam and is excellent on laminate, wood and tile. The Gen5detect isn't meaningfully better than the V15 on hard floors – both are excellent.

Pet and long hair

The anti-tangle Motorbar head and Hair Screw tool are both included on Absolute kits, and owner feedback on hair wrap is broadly positive.

Battery and charging

Dyson's up-to-70-minute figure is in Eco with a non-motorised tool. With a motorised head, expect roughly 45–55 minutes in Eco and 25–40 minutes in Auto depending on how dirty the floors are; Boost lasts under 10 minutes. That's the longest of Dyson's classic sticks and enough for most large homes in one session. A click-in spare battery extends it further. Our long battery life guide compares it with Shark and Samsung rivals.

Bin, filtration and maintenance

The bin is around 0.77 litres and is emptied with Dyson's push-down "point and shoot" mechanism. Dyson's main filtration upgrade is a fully sealed HEPA system intended to stop fine particles leaking from seals and joints, not just through the filter. If anyone at home has asthma or dust-mite allergies, this is a genuine advantage; our HEPA explainer covers why sealing matters. Wash the filter roughly monthly and let it dry fully.

Availability, kits and the newer Dysons

The Gen5detect has been joined by newer Dyson models since its launch, and some UK retailers have stopped stocking certain Gen5detect kits. It's still sold through Dyson and selected retailers at the time of writing, and also appears refurbished. Kits you may see:

  • Gen5detect Absolute – Digital Motorbar, Fluffy Optic head, Hair Screw tool and small tools. The kit to buy.
  • Gen5detect (standard) – fewer tools; check whether the Fluffy Optic head is included.
  • Gen5outsize – a larger-bin, wider-head variant aimed at bigger homes; heavier still.

The Gen5detect wins every spec line except weight and price. Whether that's worth it depends on how big your home is and how much the trigger bothers you; our V15 vs Gen5detect comparison covers each round.

Who the Gen5detect is for

Large homes. If you have four bedrooms or more, lots of carpet and stairs, the longer runtime and stronger suction mean you're more likely to finish in one session. See best cordless hoover for large homes.

People who dislike triggers. The button is a quality-of-life upgrade for anyone with hand pain or who cleans for long stretches.

Allergy sufferers. Fully sealed HEPA filtration is Dyson's strongest claim for keeping fine particles inside the machine. Our allergy guide lists other well-sealed options.

Who should skip it: smaller homes, people who find heavy sticks tiring, and anyone who'd rather spend the difference on a second battery or a different machine. A discounted V15 or a Shark PowerDetect will clean most homes just as effectively day to day.

Running costs and ownership

No bags and a washable filter keep running costs down. The battery is the main long-term cost and is specific to the Gen5 platform, so check availability and price before buying a used or refurbished unit. As with any lithium-ion hoover, avoid storing it in a cold garage or leaving it fully drained for long periods; our battery life guide explains why.

Common owner-reported issues

The Gen5detect hasn't developed a reputation for a specific widespread fault, but owners do report the usual cordless niggles: hair collecting at the ends of the brush bar if it isn't checked, the filter warning appearing when the filter is damp or dirty, and runtime dropping as the battery ages. The button-based power switch also means it's easier to leave running while you move furniture, so get into the habit of pausing it. Most problems are covered in our Dyson troubleshooting guide.

Pros and cons

  • Power button, not a trigger
  • Top-tier carpet and hard-floor cleaning
  • Up to 70 minutes claimed; click-in spare available
  • Fully sealed HEPA filtration for allergy homes
  • Around 3.5kg: heavy in handheld mode
  • Expensive, even discounted
  • Only a small cleaning gain over the V15
  • Kit availability is patchier than for the V15

FAQs

Is the Gen5detect better than the V15 Detect?

Slightly, on paper and in most independent results: more suction, longer runtime, a power button and fully sealed HEPA filtration. Whether that's worth the usual price difference depends mostly on how much you value the button and the extra runtime.

Do V15 batteries fit the Gen5detect?

No. The Gen5detect uses its own battery pack. Buy batteries listed specifically for the Gen5.

Is the Gen5detect too heavy?

At around 3.5kg it's heavy for a stick, particularly in handheld mode. If you clean a lot of stairs or have limited grip strength, try one in a shop first or consider a lighter model.

Can the Gen5detect replace a corded hoover?

For most homes, yes: its runtime and suction are enough for a whole-house clean. Our cordless vs corded guide explains when a corded machine still makes sense.
