Shark Cordless Hoover Troubleshooting
We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. How this works.
Most Shark cordless faults are fixed by clearing a blockage, cleaning the filters, freeing the brush roll or reseating the battery. Shark uses lights on the handle and the floor head to signal these problems, but what each light means varies between models (Anti Hair Wrap, Stratos, Detect Pro, PowerDetect and WandVac), so check your model's manual or Shark's UK support pages alongside this guide.
Quick answer: Will not power on → charge fully and reseat the battery. Brush roll stops or the head light flashes → switch off, clear hair and objects from the roller and head neck, then restart. Losing suction → empty the bin, wash both filters, check the wand and flexible joint. Clean & Empty base not emptying → check the base bin/bag, the dock port and the stick's bin seal.

Find your model first
The model number (for example IZ202UK, IZ400UK, IZ300UK or IP1251UK) is on a label, usually behind or under the bin or on the main body. Letters at the end (like UKT) usually indicate a bundle with extra tools rather than a different machine. Knowing the exact model matters when you look up light codes and order parts. Our Shark cordless guide explains the range.
Watch out: Switch off and remove the battery before clearing blockages or touching the brush roll. Never wet the battery, motor body or a floor head containing a motor. Stop using the hoover if the battery is swollen, hot or damaged, or if you smell burning after clearing blockages.
Problem 1: Shark will not turn on
- Charge it. Place it on the charger or plug the charger into the battery directly (most Shark batteries can be charged on or off the hoover). Look for the battery lights to show charging.
- Reseat the battery. Remove it and click it back in firmly. A partly seated battery is a common cause of no power.
- Check the bin and filter. On some models the hoover will not run properly if the bin or filters are not fitted correctly.
- Let it cool. If you were using Boost heavily, or it shut off mid-clean, thermal protection may have tripped. Leave it 30–60 minutes, clear any blockage, then try again.
- Clean contacts. Wipe the metal contacts on the battery, handle, wand ends and floor head with a dry cloth.
- Try a second battery if you have one (some bundles include two). If the second works, the first battery is at fault.
Problem 2: Brush roll stops or floor head light flashes
Many Shark floor heads have an indicator light. On a lot of models, a red or flashing light on the head signals that the brush roll is obstructed or has stopped. Exact colours and behaviour vary, so check your manual.
- Switch off and remove the battery.
- Detach the floor head and turn it over.
- Remove the brush roll if your model allows (look for a release button or a cover on the underside) and clear hair, threads and trapped objects. Pay attention to the ends.
- Check the neck of the head and the flexible swivel for clumps.
- Wipe the electrical contacts where the head meets the wand.
- Refit, restore power and restart. The light should clear.
On Anti Hair Wrap models the comb should stop most hair wrapping, but long strands and threads can still build up at the ends. See how to clean a brush roll for the full method.
Problem 3: Losing suction
- Empty the bin and pull hair off the mesh screen.
- Remove and clean the pre-motor filter (usually foam and felt, under the bin lid or on the motor side). Rinse in cold water if the manual allows and dry for at least 24 hours.
- Check the post-motor filter, often at the back of the handle or near the top of the body. Clean or replace as your manual instructs.
- Detach the wand and look through it. On Flexology models, check the folding joint, which can catch debris.
- Check the floor head neck, then run the body without attachments to isolate the blockage.
Full diagnosis is in our losing suction guide.
Problem 4: Clean & Empty base not emptying
Shark's auto-empty bases (on models such as the PowerDetect Clean & Empty and Detect Pro with auto-empty) pull the stick's bin contents into the base when you dock it.
- Check the base's own bin or bag is not full; empty or replace it.
- Look in the docking port on the base for a blockage and clear it with the power off.
- Check the stick's bin door and seal are clean and close fully; a dirty seal stops the base creating suction.
- Make sure the stick is fully seated in the dock.
- Clean the base's filter if it has one (check your manual).
- Unplug the base for a few minutes, then reconnect.
Read more about these systems in our Shark PowerDetect review.
Problem 5: Battery lights flashing or not charging
Shark batteries commonly show charge level with a row of lights. While charging, the lights usually flash in sequence and turn solid when full. A pattern that does not match normal charging, or no lights at all, can indicate a charger problem, a battery outside its safe temperature range, or a battery fault. Check your manual for your model's exact patterns, then work through our not-charging checklist.
Symptom, cause, fix
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No power | Flat or loose battery, thermal cut-out | Charge, reseat, let cool 30–60 min |
| Brush roll stops, head light on | Hair or object jamming roller | Battery out, clear roller and neck, restart |
| Body runs, head dead | Dirty contacts or faulty head | Clean contacts; try head on another wand if possible |
| Weak suction | Full bin, dirty filters, blocked wand/joint | Empty, wash filters, clear blockages |
| Cuts out after a few minutes | Overheating from blockage, or ageing battery | Clear blockages; if it persists with clean filters, battery may need replacing |
| Base will not empty bin | Full base, blocked port, dirty bin seal | Empty base, clear port, clean seal |
| Hoover will not stand up | Flexology/self-standing head not locked | Check the head and wand are fully clicked in |
| Burning smell | Hair friction or electrical fault | Stop; clear roller; if persists, see burning smell guide |
When to stop and contact Shark
Contact Shark if the battery is swollen or very hot, if burning smells continue after cleaning, if fault lights persist after charging and clearing blockages, or if the motor grinds. Have your model and serial number ready, plus proof of purchase. Shark's warranty length varies by model and whether you registered the product, so check your paperwork or registration. Our warranty guide explains your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

FAQs
How do I reset my Shark cordless?
Most models have no reset button. Switch off, remove the battery, clear blockages, let it cool for 30–60 minutes if it overheated, then refit the battery. That clears most temporary lockouts.
Can I wash Shark filters?
Most Shark pre-motor filters are washable in cold water; some post-motor filters are too. Check the manual, never use detergent, and dry for at least 24 hours before refitting.
Why does my Shark only work in handheld mode?
If the body runs but the floor head does not, the electrical connection through the wand is usually the issue. Clean contacts at each joint and check the head and wand click in fully. If that fails, the head may be faulty.
Do Shark batteries fit other Shark models?
Some do within the same family, but not across all ranges. Check the battery part number in your manual before buying a spare.
