Shark Cordless Hoovers: The UK Range Explained (2026)
We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. How this works.
For most UK homes the best Shark cordless hoover is the PowerDetect Cordless for whole-house cleaning, or the Anti Hair Wrap Cordless with Flexology if you want Shark's core strengths for a lot less money. Shark's range looks confusing because the same machine is sold in several bundles with different model codes, but there are really only four or five stick vacuums underneath, plus the WandVac handhelds.
Quick answer: Buy the Shark PowerDetect Cordless if you want the newest, smartest Shark and can wait for a sale. Buy the Anti Hair Wrap Cordless with Flexology (ideally the twin-battery IZ202UKT) for the best value. Choose the Stratos if it is discounted below the PowerDetect and you have pets and lots of carpet. Skip any Shark bundle that adds tools you will never use for £50–£100 more.

The Shark cordless range at a glance
This table covers the stick and handheld lines Shark currently sells in the UK through its own site, Argos, Currys, John Lewis, AO and Amazon. Price bands are typical ranges, not live prices; Shark discounts heavily and often, so check the current price before you buy.
| Line | Type | Best for | Typical price band |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anti Hair Wrap Cordless with Flexology (IZ202UK / IZ202UKT) | Stick, bendable wand | Value all-rounder, long hair | £200–£330 |
| Stratos Cordless (IZ400UK / IZ420UKT) | Stick, bendable wand | Pets, carpets, odour control | £280–£450 |
| Detect Pro Cordless | Stick, lighter build | Mixed floors, smaller homes | £250–£400 |
| PowerDetect Cordless (incl. Clean & Empty) | Stick, optional self-empty dock | Whole-house cleaning, pet hair | £330–£550 |
| WandVac / WandVac System | Handheld (System adds stick) | Quick tidy-ups, small flats | £100–£250 |
Older and retailer-exclusive Sharks ("Pet" or "Pro" bundles, earlier IZ sticks, auto-empty versions) are usually close relatives of these lines with a different toolkit, colour or battery count.
How Shark's naming and model codes work
Shark model codes look random but follow a loose pattern that helps you compare bundles.
- Prefix: IZ codes cover the Flexology-era sticks (Anti Hair Wrap, Stratos). IW and IP codes cover newer platforms such as Detect Pro and PowerDetect. WV and WS are WandVac handhelds and systems.
- "UK" vs "UKT": a code ending in UKT is a "twin" pack, which almost always means two batteries. Some UKT bundles also add extra tools. A UK code is usually one battery.
- "Pet", "Pro", "Plus" and "Pet Pro" names: these normally indicate extra attachments (a motorised pet tool, an anti-allergen brush, a longer crevice tool) rather than more suction.
The practical rule: pick the line first, then pick the cheapest bundle that has the battery count and tools you actually need. A second battery is the only extra that changes what the hoover can do; most others are nice-to-haves. Our Shark sale guide covers how these bundles move in price through the year.
Shark technology explained
Anti Hair Wrap
Shark's headline feature. A comb-like strip sits against the brush roll and lifts hair off as it spins, so long human hair and pet hair end up in the bin rather than wound around the roller. It works well on most hair, though very long hair can still occasionally catch at the roller ends. It cuts down the scissor-and-seam-ripper job that Dyson owners with older heads know well. Our long hair guide compares it with Dyson's conical rollers.
DuoClean and PowerFins
DuoClean heads pair a soft front roller (for fine dust and larger debris on hard floors) with a main brush roll for carpets. PowerFins replaced bristles on many newer heads with flexible silicone fins that stay in contact with the floor, which helps on hard floors and grips hair on carpet. PowerFins HairPro is the anti-wrap version used on Stratos and PowerDetect.
Flexology wand
Press a button and the wand folds in the middle so you can reach under beds and sofas without crouching. The same hinge lets the hoover stand folded for storage, which is handy if you lack a wall to drill. It adds a little weight and a little flex compared with a solid tube, which some owners notice when pushing hard on thick carpet.
Detect technologies
On Detect Pro and PowerDetect, the head and wand carry sensors: dirt detection boosts power when it senses more debris, edge detection boosts suction and side airflow along skirting boards, and floor detection adjusts settings between carpet and hard floor. PowerDetect also has headlights to show dust on hard floors. On paper this is similar to Dyson's auto mode. In practice it mainly saves battery by staying in lower power until it is needed.
Odour Neutraliser and Clean & Empty
Stratos and some PowerDetect models include an Odour Neutraliser cartridge in the bin area that releases scent as you clean. It masks rather than removes smells and needs replacing every few months, so it is an ongoing cost. Clean & Empty refers to an auto-empty dock that sucks out the bin each time you park the hoover; see our self-emptying guide for the pros and cons.
Which Shark cordless hoover should you buy?
Shark PowerDetect Cordless
The newest full-size Shark stick and the one to buy if you want a single hoover for the whole house. It combines the PowerFins HairPro head, Detect sensors, headlights and a stronger motor than the Anti Hair Wrap models, and independent reviews generally rate its carpet pick-up and hair handling among the best at its price. It is also lighter in the hand than the Stratos. The Clean & Empty version adds a self-emptying dock, which is worth it mainly for allergy sufferers. Full details in our PowerDetect review.
- Strong carpet and pet-hair performance
- Sensors save battery in mixed homes
- Optional self-emptying dock
- Full price is close to Dyson V15 territory
- Dock takes up floor space
Shark Anti Hair Wrap Cordless with Flexology (IZ202UKT)
Still Shark's bestselling stick for good reason. You get the DuoClean head with anti-wrap, Flexology wand, a removable battery and solid cleaning on both carpet and hard floors. It lacks sensors, has a smaller bin and is noticeably less powerful than PowerDetect on deep carpet, but it is regularly discounted to a price where it beats almost everything else. The twin-battery IZ202UKT is the version to buy. See our Anti Hair Wrap review.
- Excellent value in sales
- Anti-wrap works with long hair
- Twin batteries give realistic whole-house runtime
- Weaker on thick carpet than newer Sharks
- Bin is small for large homes
Shark Stratos Cordless (IZ400UK / IZ420UKT)
Stratos was Shark's flagship before PowerDetect and remains a strong pet-hair machine, with the DuoClean PowerFins HairPro head, Clean Sense IQ dirt detection and the Odour Neutraliser. It is heavier and the battery life is shorter than PowerDetect, so it only makes sense when it is clearly cheaper. In sales it often is. Read the Stratos review or see how it fares in Shark Stratos vs Dyson V15.
- Powerful on carpets and pet hair
- Frequently discounted
- Heavy for stairs and overhead work
- Odour cartridge is an ongoing cost
Shark WandVac System
A very slim handheld that clips onto a wand and floorhead, so it doubles as a lightweight stick for flats. It will not replace a full-size stick in a carpeted family home, but for small flats, stairs, cars and crumbs it is one of the most convenient hoovers you can buy. Details in our WandVac review.
- Very light and easy to grab
- Self-emptying dock on some versions
- Short runtime and small bin
- Not for deep-pile carpet
Where does Detect Pro fit? It is lighter and slimmer than Stratos with a smaller bin and shorter runtime, and it suits smaller homes with mostly hard floors. It tends to be priced awkwardly close to PowerDetect, so we would usually take PowerDetect unless Detect Pro is well discounted; our Detect Pro review covers when it makes sense. For a ranked list across the whole range, see the best Shark cordless hoover.
Shark vs other brands
Shark's main rival is Dyson. Shark usually wins on hair handling (anti-wrap heads as standard), bendable wands and price, while Dyson generally wins on filtration, battery management and sheer suction at the top end. Our Shark vs Dyson comparison matches the two brands tier by tier.
Against Vax, Shark offers better hair handling and a more polished design, while Vax is cheaper and its ONEPWR batteries work across several products (Shark vs Vax). Against Gtech, Shark is more versatile, but Gtech's bagged Pro 2 and upright AirRAM suit different households (Gtech vs Shark). If you are torn between a Shark and a bagged Henry Quick, our Henry Quick vs Shark page explains the trade-off.
Batteries, runtime and charging
Shark quotes runtimes of up to around 40 minutes per battery on Anti Hair Wrap models and up to around an hour on PowerDetect, but those figures are for eco mode and often with a non-motorised tool. With the main floorhead on carpet in normal mode, expect roughly half the headline figure, and boost mode drains a battery in under 10 minutes.
All current Shark sticks use a removable battery that can be charged on or off the hoover, which is why twin-battery UKT bundles are so useful: one charges while you clean. Batteries are not always interchangeable between lines, so check compatibility before buying a spare. Our battery life guide explains how runtime fades over the years.
Reliability, parts and warranty
Shark's UK guarantee on cordless hoovers has typically been two years, and registering the product with Shark is usually required to get the full cover; check the terms for your exact model when you buy, as Shark has changed its guarantee offers over the years. Batteries are generally covered for the guarantee period too. Beyond that, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 still gives you rights against the retailer for faults that were present at purchase. See our warranty guide.
Shark sells replacement filters, batteries, floorheads and wands directly, and Amazon and specialist parts sellers stock genuine and third-party spares for popular models such as the IZ202UK. Owners most commonly report battery fade after a few years, brush rolls stopping (often hair or a blocked head rather than a failed motor) and flashing lights caused by blockages or dirty filters. Our Shark troubleshooting guide walks through each of these.
Watch out: Shark's filters need regular rinsing and full drying (24 hours) to keep suction strong. Many "dead" Sharks are simply clogged. Try the steps in our losing suction guide before you send one back.
Where to buy a Shark cordless hoover
Shark sells through its own UK website as well as Argos, Currys, John Lewis, AO, Amazon and supermarkets. Prices move frequently; the big drops tend to arrive around Black Friday, January sales, Easter and Amazon Prime Day, and older lines like Stratos and Anti Hair Wrap fall further once a replacement launches. Shark's own site sometimes bundles extra tools or a longer guarantee, while retailers may offer price matching or more generous returns. Before buying, check our best time to buy guide.
Shark also sells refurbished models through its UK site and outlets. These can be good value, but check the guarantee length and whether the battery is new. Our refurbished cordless hoover guide covers the checks.
Is a Shark the right cordless hoover for you?
A Shark is a strong choice if you have pets, long hair in the household, mixed carpet and hard floors, or you want a hoover that folds to reach under furniture. It is less ideal if you need a very light stick for someone with limited strength (the Flexology models are front-heavy), or if allergies are your top priority and you want a fully sealed HEPA system as standard, where Dyson's Detect models are stronger. FAQs
What is the difference between Shark IZ202UK and IZ202UKT?
They are the same Anti Hair Wrap Cordless with Flexology hoover. The UKT version comes with two batteries (and sometimes extra tools), which doubles your available runtime. It is usually worth the extra £30–£50 if your home takes more than 20 minutes to hoover.
Are Shark cordless batteries interchangeable?
Within a line, usually yes, and some batteries are shared across closely related models. Between different generations, often not. Check the battery part number on Shark's parts page against your model code before buying a spare.
How long does a Shark cordless hoover last?
With regular filter cleaning, owners commonly get four to six years from the body, though the battery may need replacing after three to four years of frequent use. Parts availability for popular models is good, which helps keep older Sharks running.
Can a Shark cordless replace a corded hoover?
For most flats and average houses, a PowerDetect or twin-battery Anti Hair Wrap can do the whole job. Large homes with lots of deep carpet may still benefit from a corded upright for occasional deep cleans. Our cordless vs corded guide covers this in detail.
